GARY | A failed inspection on Wednesday on the elevator and escalator that take passengers up to the South Shore platform at the Gary Metro Center station forced both to be taken out of service indefinitely, making the station inaccessible to disabled commuters.

Spokesman John Parsons said the equipment will remain out of service until repairs are made and follow up inspections are complete.

The two closest accessible stations are the East Chicago and Portage/Ogden Dunes stations.

John Parsons, spokesman for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, said announcements are being made on all trains in an effort to get the word out to riders.
