GARY | Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education is a reality at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy.
Twenty students from grades 3-6 participated in the Wired for Wind Science Challenge recently with materials were provided by Lake County 4-H Department.
The students watched a PowerPoint presentation and a video about wind energy and discussed the green energy alternative. Then, in groups of four, students were asked to design, build, and test two different wind turbine models.
Each group had to design the blades for their turbine and experiment using different pitches. They used a fan to test the amount of energy their prototype, as well as their final model, produced.
The Wired for Wind project was designed to explore how to engineer renewable energy technologies, and the positive impact that they can have in communities across the country and the world. The students were engaged and motivated to create the turbine that produced the most wind energy, said Tammy Tiede, high ability coordinator at the school.
Former Mayor of Gary Thomas Barnes stopped by to encourage the students and discussed the importance of STEM education with them.
