CROWN POINT | An Alsip man charged in the death of 76-year-old Mary Austgen remains without a lawyer one month after his arrest.
Ralph Martinez, 57, appeared Friday morning wearing Lake County Jail black and white stripped coveralls before Lake Criminal Court Judge Diane Boswell for a pretrial hearing on charges of murder, robbery and criminal confinement in the slaying of the Griffith businesswoman.
Martinez said his family hasn't yet found a private attorney. She said she will give his family until June 26 to hire a lawyer. The public defender's staff is representing him on a standby basis until a private lawyer is hired.
Martinez is accused of kidnapping the St. John woman at gunpoint March 28 from her family business in Griffith. Her body was found the next day in the parking garage of the Majestic Star Casino in Gary.
Martinez, a former business tenant of the victim's family, is accused of possessing stolen jewelry and other valuables from her.
