GARY | Police are searching for a man who carjacked a vehicle Wednesday morning from the Miller South Shore train station in Gary.
A 25-year-old Merrillville man was dropping off his girlfriend at 7:18 a.m. at the station in the 500 block of South Lake Street when an unidentified man pointed a handgun at the driver's door, police said.
The man told the couple to leave their belongings in the car and get out. The couple complied with the man's demands.
Gary police spotted the vehicle and began a pursuit. The chase ended when the man crashed the car into a tree in the 300 block of Burr Street.
The man fled on foot from the crash. Police used a K-9 to search for the suspect but weren't able to find him.
Bob Byrd, chief of Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Transit Police, said there weren't any officers at the station at the time of the carjacking. There also were no additional witnesses to the carjacking.
Byrd said officers are reviewing surveillance video from the station. Gary police and NICTD police are investigating the carjacking.
