GARY | An investigation of a suspicious package on the platform at the Miller South Shore commuter rail station delayed a westbound train there Friday morning.
Robert Byrd, Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Transit Police chief, said a conductor on Train No. 108 noticed a backpack on the platform near the Kiss and Ride drop off at the station just before 6:30 a.m.
The conductor contacted transit police, as is protocol for suspicious packages, Byrd said.
Transit police quickly responded and determined the package was harmless and contained a laptop computer and other personal belongings. Byrd said arrangements were underway Friday morning to return the backpack to its owner.
The investigation delayed the train by about 15 minutes.
