CROWN POINT | A 17-year-old Gary teen charged with murder is being sought in the fatal shooting of Laroi Griffin earlier this month, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Department.
De'Vonte Hodge, of the 1700 block of Hendricks Street, was charged Thursday in connection with Griffin's shooting on Feb. 9.
Griffin, 32, was shot twice in the back of the head and died at the scene in the 1100 block of West 21st Avenue in Gary, a news release issued by Public Information Officer Patti Van Til stated.
According to Van Til, the investigation revealed a small group of individuals, including Griffin and Hodge, were engaged about 12:25 a.m. in a conversation about "killing people."
Hodge is alleged to have gotten into an argument with Griffin, firing a semi-automatic handgun twice at Griffin who fled on foot.
With Griffin about 10 feet away and still running, Hodge is alleged to have fired at Griffin a third time.
All individuals at the scene fled as Gary police officers arrived, according to Van Til.
County police assumed the investigation at the request of Gary city officials after allegations of police involvement in the shooting.
Anyone with information on Hodge, who is currently at large, may call 911 or county police Cmdr. Matt Eaton at (219) 755-3346.
