GARY | A 16-year-old boy and his mother foiled an attempted theft of Gucci and Jaguar glasses from a Gary store, police said.
The boy and his mother were inside the store the mother manages in the 500 block of Broadway at 9:50 a.m., police Cpl. Gabrielle King said. A man described as black, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and 220 pounds walked in the store and pulled out a weapon and bag, King said.
He then demanded the woman fill the bag with "designer eyewear," King said.
Once they complied, the man demanded they get into the bathroom, King said. The 16-year-old, fearing for his mother's safety, then grabbed the man and disarmed him. The boy and his mother pushed the man outside, where he ran east down the alley, empty-handed, King said.
Police later discovered the gun was a toy, King said.
"While we are pleased with the outcome of this situation, we do not encourage citizens to take matters into their own hands," King said. "Please call the police."
