Pantry on the Go stops in Gary

GARY | The Northwest Indiana Food Bank brings the Pantry on the Go from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Genesis Convention Center, 1 Genesis Center Plaza. It offers free grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy and protein, while supplies last, to those all Northwest Indiana residents needing food assistance. Bring bags or boxes to carry items home and valid proof of Indiana residence.

Homebuyer workshop slated

HAMMOND | United Neighborhoods Inc. is hosting a free Homebuyer Education Workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the United Neighborhoods In., 5209 Hohman Ave., Hammond. Those completing the eight-hour course receive a certificate that may entitle them to down payment assistance through the city of Hammond. Festival of the Lakes opens

HAMMOND |The Festival of the Lakes opens to its five-day run at 5 p.m. at Wolf Lake Park. It features food vendors, a midway, free pontoon boat rides, activities for children and a Smokey Robinson concert at 7 p.m. on the Main Stage.

Mobile pantry visits Hammond

HAMMOND | The Northwest Indiana Food Bank's Pantry on the Go stops from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Jean Shepherd Center, 3031 Mahoney Drive, Hammond.

Troupe stages 'Great Gatsby'

SCHERERVILLE | The Northwest Indiana Symphony presents its free South Shore Summer Music Festival from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Redar Park, Austin Street north of U.S. 30. The rain site is Lake Central High School.

SATURDAY

Hip Hop takes spotlight

HAMMOND | It's Special Persons Day and Hip Hop Night at Festival of the Lakes. The Kathleen Pucalik Memorial 5K Run & Walk is at 8 a.m. at Wolf Lark Park; registration at 7. All special needs people ride the midway free from 10 a.m. to noon. The park opens at noon. LL Cool J is on the Main Stage at 7 p.m.; a fireworks show is at 10:30 at Wolf Lake Park.

Park Full of Art starts

GRIFFITH | The 39th annual A Park Full of Art is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at Central Park, 600 N. Broad St. Art is available to buy; refreshments are available.

Grape Escape beckons

MUNSTER | The Munster Parks and Recreation Department hosts The Grape Escape from noon to 8 p.m. at Centennial Park. For a $5 fee, guests over the age of 21 can enter the wine tasting area for samples of local wine and beer. It offers artists, crafts an ethnic market, food vendors and live music.

NWISO plays in Cedar Lake

CEDAR LAKE | The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra performs a free concert from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Cedar Lake Town Complex grounds, 7408 Constitution Ave. The rain site is Hanover Central High School. 

SUNDAY

Car show aids charity

HIGHLAND | Christenson Chevrolet, in association with the Crown Point Corvette Club, presents its annual Charity Car and Truck Show. Registration is from 8 to 10 a.m.; the show runs until 3 p.m. at Christenson Chevrolet, 9700 U.S. 41, Highland. There is a $25 entry fee.

Polkas, Latin music on tap

HAMMOND | Registration for Hammond's 10th annual Festival of the Lakes' Rod & Custom Show is 9 a.m. to noon. The show follows immediately. There is a $20 entry fee; spectators admitted free of charge.

It's also Polka Day and Latin Night at Festival of the Lakes. The Polka Party is from 2 to 6 pm. at the Hammond Marina, 701 Casino Center Drive. The festival opens at noon at Wolf Lake Park with a variety of activities; La Original Banda El Limon performs on the Main Stage at 7.
