GARY | A three-day hands-on anatomy workshop involving 44 participants from around the world begins today at the IU School of Medicine Northwest, on the campus of Indiana University Northwest in Gary.

The International Human Cadaver Prosection Program gives people who are not doctors or medical students a chance to be active volunteers in the gross anatomy lab on campus.

The participants prepare human body donors for the incoming fall gross anatomy class by removing the donors’ skin and body fat to expose organs, muscles and other anatomical structures.

Led by Ernest Talarico — associate director of medical education, associate professor of anatomy and cell biology and course director of human gross anatomy and embryology — participants will learn human anatomy, medical imaging, wound suturing, tissue histology, embryology, prosthetics and other medical specialties.

Earlier this month, some of the participants joined IUN students in creating medical images of the cadavers' skulls, abdomens and chests. The donors then were transported to Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus for high-resolution CT scans and MRIs.

Workshops on suturing, prosthetics and orthotics are scheduled for today. Wednesday and Thursday, participants will conduct the cadaver prosection. The program will conclude with a memorial service Thursday.

Talarico emphasizes the dignity and humanity of the body donors, who essentially become the prosectors’ and fall medical students’ first patients.

Fall semester medical students are given the opportunity to correspond with, and sometimes even meet the families of the donors.
