HOBART | TradeWinds Services plans to move administrative offices from its Gary location to its new facility in Hobart in a few weeks, representatives said last week.
"We're beginning with a soft move," Jon Gold, CEO of TradeWinds, said in a statement issued last week. "We will move consumer services, classrooms and equipment last in order to minimize disruption to our consumers and their caregivers."
TradeWinds, which serves people with special needs, is moving from its current location at 5901 W. 7th Ave. in Gary to its new location at the former AmeriClean building at 3198 E. 83rd Place in Hobart. The move, which required more than $3 million in renovations to the building, was made possible by a contribution from an anonymous donor.
TradeWinds was founded in 1966 as a facility that offered physical rehabilitation services to children in Northwest Indiana. TradeWinds now provides a variety of services to children and adults with disabilities including child care, adult day training, residential services and employment services.
TradeWinds also produces products for various industries as well.
Administrative and nonprogramming offices will relocate first. The full move will be completed by late December.
The facility in Gary will remain open through the end of the year with a possible extension into 2014.
"It is important that we have the capacity to continue serving our current consumers and new participants during the transition," Gold said in the statement.
Connie Skozen, director of marketing for TradeWinds, said the facility is stressing the services it is able to provide in light of the last week's news of the closing of Arc of Indiana group homes, which also serve those with special needs.
"We very much want the consumers who have been affected and their loved ones/caretakers (to know) that TradeWinds may be of service to them at this time," Skozen said.
