GARY | TradeWinds is participating in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual campaign that takes place each October.
“This is an especially meaningful campaign to TradeWinds,” said Vernita Johnson-Macklin, director of Employment Services, “because our Work Solutions program is designed to assist adults with varying abilities to obtain and maintain employment. By partnering with employers in the community, we have been able to place our participants in meaningful positions, assisting them with a measure of independence by being an active member of the working community.”
The Work Solutions program assesses the individual’s career interests, abilities and goals and enlists an Employment Specialist to assist in developing a Plan for Employment Support. Skill training is provided in such areas as resume writing, conflict resolution, meeting employer expectations and interviewing techniques.
With the guidance of the Employment Specialist and in partnership with employers in the Northwest Indiana community, the individual is placed in a job and may receive ongoing support.
“TradeWinds is proud to celebrate this year's National Disability Employment Awareness Month," Johnson-Macklin said. "We want to spread the important message that a strong workforce is one inclusive of the skills and talents of all individuals, including individuals with varying abilities. This year’s theme, ‘Because We Are Equal To the Task’ conveys the message perfectly.”
