CROWN POINT | A jury trial was vacated Monday for one of three men charged in the May 2012 slaying of a Schererville woman during a robbery outside her apartment.
Stephen Lee Henderson, 27, of Gary, will now face trial July 14 in Lake Criminal Court.
Henderson is charged with murder and murder during the perpetration of a robbery in the shooting death of Jacqueline Gardner, 24, outside her home in the 8000 block of Alpine Lane on May 19, 2012. The other two men charged in the case are William Blasingame III, 32, of East Hazel Crest, Ill., and Michael Allen Craig, 27, of Merrillville.
Gardner died at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville of a gunshot wound to the ride side of her back.
According to court documents, a witness heard heavy footsteps and a struggle about 11:30 p.m. in the hallway of his apartment building. He told police he looked through his peephole and saw Henderson put Gardner in a choke hold. The witness said he saw Gardner on the hallway floor after he called 911.
Police recovered a 12-gauge shotgun shell in the apartment building, and investigators determined Gardner’s tip money from her job as a waitress was missing, according to court documents.
Craig told police the three men waited for Gardner to come home that Saturday night and that Blasingame and Henderson, armed with a shotgun, followed Gardner into the apartment, court records state.
Blasingame is due in court March 7, and Craig has a hearing scheduled for April 9.
