GARY | A Gary police officer suffered injuries to his leg after his squad car was involved in a fiery crash on the Burr Street overpass over the Borman Expressway Thursday night.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Department, officer Michael Mitchell, 26, was southbound on Burr Street when another motorist cut him off. His car then struck a curb and became engulfed in flames. The other driver fled the scene, according to Lake County police spokeswoman Patti Van Til.

According to Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram, passing truck drivers stopped and pulled the officer out of his squad car. The officer was taken to Methodist Hospital, Northlake Campus.

Ingram said he went to the crash scene and went to The Methodist Hospitals' Northlake campus in Gary, where he spoke with the officer.
