GARY | Two unidentified bodies were found in a nearly 15-foot-high pile of horse manure Sunday morning.

A man cleaning up property near the intersection of 22nd Place and Mississippi Street came across an arm sticking out of the pile, officials said.

The man called police around 10:30 a.m., Gary police Detective Mike Barnes said.

"As we were uncovering the first body, we came across a second body also in that pile," he said.

The manure is a compilation of years worth of horse waste from a nearby stable, he said.

Officials had to carefully go through the rest of the pile to ensure no other bodies were hidden inside, Barnes said.

The first victim was described as an unidentified white man, according to the Lake County coroner's office. The second body was wrapped in plastic and also is unidentified.

Investigators are unsure of the gender of the second person because the plastic hasn't been removed, Barnes said.

They will wait to open the plastic until the coroner can perform an autopsy on Monday for more clues to how the duo died.

"If somebody is missing, (family or friends) are more than welcome to call," Barnes said. "We don't have the two people identified yet and we have no idea who they are at this point."

Officials urge anyone with information about this case to contact Barnes at (219) 881-7434.
