CROWN POINT | Prosecutors on Tuesday charged two Gary men in connection with August's fatal shooting of Juan Nieves, also of Gary.
Jory Peters, 27, was charged with murder.
In addition, Peters and Roosevelt Franklin, 27, each were charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of attempted battery and a single count of criminal recklessness for an alleged attack on Nieves a week before his death.
A relative of Nieves told police Peters and Franklin followed Nieves in their car on Aug. 7 in the area of 25th Avenue and Broadway in Gary before firing several shots at the car in which Nieves was a passenger.
Peters is alleged to have accused Nieves and another man of robbing him, according to the probable cause affidavit.
On Aug. 14, police responding to reports of a shooting at 25th Avenue and Washington Street discovered Nieves had been shot. He later died of his injuries.
Peters and Franklin were reported to have driven their car alongside Nieves' pickup and fired, the affidavit states.
Peters initially denied involvement but later claimed someone was shooting at him and Franklin, according to the affidavit.
The investigation, however, revealed no evidence of damage to Peters' car or that Nieves was armed prior to his death, police stated in the affidavit.
