GARY | More than 100 volunteers arrived ready to work Friday to continue transforming the former Tolleston school into the new John Will Anderson Boys & Girls Clubs Community Center.
Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, were among the volunteers working toward what Freeman-Wilson called a "dream come true."
"Today's volunteer activity is the first of many as citizens continue to roll up their sleeves to help our city move forward," she said. "Our children deserve it."
Visclosky said, "People are working so hard to renew Gary, Ind., and focus on the children. It's absolutely heartwarming, and I am fortunate for the opportunity to be part of this effort."
The two-day Clean Sweep Initiative on Gary's west side to help prepare parts of the building for demolition and other for renovation as a state-of-the-art center is scheduled for completion in 2013.
This week's initiative, spearheaded by Eddie Melton, NIPSCO manager of community relations and communications, will continue Saturday.
