It was all about caring in Lake County as United Way sponsored its annual Day of Caring last month for volunteers from businesses and civic groups.

Nowhere was the caring more evident than at The Arc Northwest Indiana. "The people at The Arc Northwest Indiana were showered with real care and affection from community friends," said Sue Crisman, director of public relations for The Arc. Work projects were completed at the South and West community centers as well as at the Knox Street group home.

Thirty volunteers from the Majestic Star Casino and Hotel, coordinated by Jodi Moore, executive assistant to Senior Vice General Manager Larry Buck, spent more than six hours on a variety of projects at the Knox Street Group Home in Gary. The projects included an extensive landscaping makeover including removing stumps; taking down old fence and rebuilding; widening the wheelchair ramp in back of house to provide easier turns; planting flowers and bushes, painting trim on the house; donating outdoor furniture; removing yard waste; and pressure washing and staining the front ramp.

Working with the volunteers from the Majestic Star was McVea Landscaping Co.

Two other volunteer groups were caring and sharing their time and talents at The Arc of Northwest Indiana's South center in Crown Point and Highland center.

A group of 15 volunteers from Cargill performed three hours of general landscaping cleanup at the Highland center, 9600 Kennedy Ave., coordinated by Karen Sheehan. The volunteers from Cargill returned to the Highland Center the next day to paint the workshop area and small kitchen.

A group of biology students from Purdue University Calumet spent the afternoon on the Day of Caring painting benches and picnic tables at the Crown Point center on Burrell Drive.

The Arc Northwest Indiana provides work and housing for individuals with developmental disabilities as well as a variety of supports for those individuals and their families.
