CROWN POINT | A Gary woman with no criminal history was sentenced Tuesday to 23 years in prison for fatally shooting a man during a violent argument at his home.
Alisha Magee, 29, was first indicted in December by a Lake County grand jury for the June 4, 2010, murder of 53-year-old Fredrick Clark.
In August, Magee agreed to a plea deal in which she pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the man's death.
Magee's mother testified to Magee, the eldest of her five children, being a gentle, helpful woman until the fateful encounter with Clark.
Plea documents state Magee went to Clark's home in the 600 block of West 25th Avenue in Gary, where a fight between them ensued.
Becoming angry, Magee pulled out a handgun she was said to carry for protection and fired twice at Clark.
Charging documents state Magee had told a confidential informant she had found Clark smoking crack. Clark is alleged to have given Magee money to go to the store for him and then started a fight with her when she returned.
Magee told the informant the fight carried into the kitchen, where Clark began choking her, and she shot him in the stomach.
Clark reputedly was on the floor swinging a knife at Magee when she hit him with an ironing board and a phone. Noticing Clark still breathing, Magee stood over him and shot him in the head.
