GARY | The woman who died due to an early morning fire Sunday at a residence at 4077 Louisiana St., Gary, has been identified as Essie Hill, 71, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

Two others, including a 9-year-old child, were hospitalized with injuries due to the fire, said Gary Deputy Fire Chief Mark Jones. Another person in the home also suffered heat- and smoke-related injuries.

Hill was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospitals Southlake campus on Sunday, according to Jones. An autopsy to determine Hill's cause of death will be performed Monday morning, according to the coroner's office.

Emergency personnel were first called to the fire about 6:40 a.m. Sunday.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, but it remains under investigation, Jones said Sunday.
