GARY | Gary council members voted in favor of an ordinance asking to vacate an alleyway in order to continue construction on the property from Eighth Avenue to Ninth Avenue, from Massachusetts Street to Connecticut Street.
The construction is for the project Northwest Indiana Homes for Heroes, which will be a 44-unit veterans housing and supportive services facility. According to Rosalyn L. Mitchell from Forms and Funktion, Inc., vacating the alleyway will allow workers to relocate utility poles, put up fencing around the property and construct the landscaping for the facility.
“The facility will have in-house social service administrators, a library/computer room, a commercial kitchen with a dining hall and even an arts and crafts room,” Mitchell said.
The project is expected to be completed in fall 2014.
Broadway Area Community Development Corp. is holding a contractor open house at 5 p.m. Monday to provide potential Gary contractors and tradesmen with an opportunity to learn more about bidding opportunities for the Homes for Heroes project. Contractors are encouraged to attend to have questions answered regarding the project and the potential opportunities for participation.
