GARY | A Gary man was struck and killed by a train Saturday afternoon, and police and railroad security personnel are investigating why he was near railroad tracks.
Marques Maurice Rummage, 29, of the 500 block of Hovey Street, suffered blunt force trauma after being struck by the train in the area of 900 Wallace St., according to the Lake County coroner's office.
CSX personnel told the Gary Police Department at 2:22 p.m. that a train heading east struck a pedestrian, Gary police Cmdr. Jon Cooros said Saturday. The Lake County coroner's office was dispatched to the area about 2:42 p.m. Rummage was pronounced dead at 3:54 p.m.
The train remained at the intersection of Clark Road and Ninth Avenue more than two hours after the incident was reported to police.
Gary patrol units, crime scene investigators and members of the violent crime team responded, Cooros said. Representatives from Norfolk Southern and CSX personnel also responded.
A message seeking comment left on the CSX media line was not returned Saturday afternoon.
