GARY | A 5-year-old Gary boy died Thursday night after injuries suffered in a head-on collision, the Lake County coroner's office reported.
Sylvester Anderson Jr., of the 4600 block of Delaware Street, was pronounced dead just after 10:30 p.m. at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus.
Gary Police Cpl. Agnes Roberts said a Pontiac Bonneville driven by the boy's mother, Vanessa Anderson, was heading north on Harrison when the car went left of center, striking a southbound Ford Expedition head-on near 43rd Place.
Roberts said the 5-year-old, who was not belted in the car, bounced into the windshield, causing fatal injuries. The coroner's office reported the cause of death as blunt force trauma.
Vanessa Anderson was taken to Methodist Northlake with chest and head injuries. Another child in the vehicle was belted in and was taken to the hospital for observation.
Roberts said when police arrived at the scene, the two front doors of the Ford Expedition were open, and the vehicle's occupants had fled the scene.
Roberts said police are continuing to investigate the accident. No charges have been filed. - By Times Staff
