CROWN POINT | The Lake County prosecutor's office has charged a Highland man and a Gary woman with robbing three pharmacies in Highland and Griffith.
Debra A. Adams, 48, of Gary, and John G. Stefanich, 56, of Highland, are named in six felony counts of armed robbery and criminal confinement.
Police allege Stefanich took a large number of narcotics June 24 from the pharmacists at the Walgreens drugstore, 1225 E. Ridge Road.
Police allege Adams took similar drugs June 26 from Doctor's Pharmacy, 2727 Highway Ave., Highland, and June 29 from the Walgreens pharmacy at 407 W. Glen Park Ave., Griffith.
Police allege the defendants showed their victims they had a handgun under jackets.
Police reviewing video surveillance images at the stores indicated the robbers drove an older model white four-door Chevy Geo Metro and a newer model silver Chevy Silverado extended cab pickup truck.
Police said they have evidence tracing the Geo Metro to Adams and the truck to Stefanich. Police described them as girlfriend and boyfriend.
Police found clothing and a large number of pharmaceuticals in the Geo Metro as well as drugs and a demand note apparently used in the robbery at her residence.
