Diocese well-represented at March for Life
It was cold and rainy, and they stood in mud, but that didn't stop 53 people representing the Diocese of Gary from participating in the 39th annual March For Life in Washington D.C. on Jan. 23.
An estimated crowd of 300,000 marched on Capitol Hill in peaceful, prayerful protest against abortion, urging legislators to reverse Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court case which legalized abortion.
The Rev. Theodore J. Mens, Pro-Life director for the Diocese of Gary, and members from St. Mary Church in Griffith, including St. Mary School eighth-graders, as well as members of St. Patrick Church Youth Group from Chesterton, and others from across Northwest Indiana, met with U.S. Senator Richard Lugar, R-Indiana, the chief of staff for U.S. Senator Dan Coats, R-Indiana, and U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, in their offices after the march.
The group attended a Sunday evening Pro-Life Vigil Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at Catholic University with approximately 10,000 others.
Before the march, the group attended the Archdiocese of Washington Youth Rally and Mass at the DC Armory with more than 10,000 youth from across the U.S.
