SCHERERVILLE │ Enbridge Energy held an information session on Thursday for Northwest Indiana landowners affected by its proposed 77-mile pipeline  project.

Construction on Line 78 is set to begin in the fall of 2014 and be in service by mid-2015. Once completed, the 36-inch diameter pipeline will deliver a capacity up to 570,000 barrels of crude oil per day adjacent to an existing Enbridge pipeline. The new line will cross six counties in two states, originating near Pontiac, Ill., and finishing in Griffith.

Local residents in attendance at the Enbridge open house at Andorra Banquets & Catering included Buck O’Day, who lives in Schererville where the pipeline will run just outside his property.

“I’m not worried about anything,” he said. “It’s buried deep enough in the ground, it’s all new modern pipe. “I have no safety qualms about it. I think safety is probably their No. 1 concern.”

Enbridge spokeswoman Jennifer Smith said landowners attend the open house to find out more about the company and the construction and safety matters regarding the new pipeline. Representatives from Enbridge included those from the product management team, land agents and environmental and regulatory staff. Local residents were also able to look at the route on a computer and see how it affects their land.

“We want to be able to answer every question that could come up about the project,” Smith said. “It’s early in the process and this is a way for us to get local input.”

Sheila Campbell and Tom Cushing, of Griffith, came to see if the new line would run along their property.

It’s not.

“We’re relieved,” Cushing said.

According to Enbridge the new pipeline will expand its capacity to transport growing supplies of crude oil produced in the Williston Basin region around North Dakota and light and heavy crude production in western Canada.

Enbridge’s network of pipelines east of the greater Chicago area is connected directly or indirectly to refineries in northern Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, eastern Canada and Pennsylvania.
