GRIFFITH | A comprehensive, colorful farmers’ market is coming to Griffith, Indiana, scheduled to open on Friday, May 3. The market will be open every Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. through the end of September. Griffith Central Market will feature a variety of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables; fresh cut flowers; herbs, honey, cakes, pastries, pies, and cheeses; packaged meats, such as sausages and organic meats; vegan and gluten free foods; sauces and spices, both Italian and Mexican; artisans displaying crafts and other works of art; and food service venues.
The market will be located adjacent to the pavilion in Central Park along North Broad Street. Ample parking is available.
Kathy Ruesken, organizer of the farmers’ market project and member of the Imagine Griffith Committee, said, “Our vision goes beyond the typical farmers’ market. We intend to infuse food, enter- tainment and the arts and present an exciting weekly festival.
“Our market will be clearly a family event. While adults are browsing our vendors, visiting the wine/craft beer tasting setting in the pavilion, or taking in the entertainment, children can play in the nearby playground.”
The committee plans to recruit 20 to 30 vendors. “At this stage we are actively looking for the best possible merchants,” Ruesken said. “We feel that the Griffith Central Market will give them an out- standing opportunity to succeed. And initial rental fees for vendors are very reasonable.”
Griffith has earned a regional reputation for hosting an annual art fair, known as the “Park Full of Art. The Griffith Central Market will build on that reputation and broaden the services we offer our community.
According to the USDA, there were 6,132 farmers’ markets across the country in 2009, with a 16% increase the following year. Source: The USDA National Farmers’ Market Directory.
