GRIFFITH | Fire crews were working Tuesday night to put out a brush fire near the 900 block of Avenue H in Griffith.
A cloud of heavy black smoke caused by the fire could be seen from several miles away. Firefighters responded at 6:15 p.m. and contained the blaze to a NIPSCO access road late Tuesday, said Don Hill, assistant chief for the Griffith Fire Department.
There were no reported injuries.
Carlos Ruiz said he owns the property at 912 N. Avenue H where the brush fire started and watched Tuesday afternoon as firefighters worked to control the blaze. He said his truck storage business spreads across 12 acres.
Ruiz said he initially thought the fire was a controlled burn from a nearby preserve. He said the fire was mainly on the outskirts of his property.
Hill said firefighters didn't know how many acres the fire had spread across. Firefighters hadn't determined the cause of blaze.
The Lake Ridge, Lake Hills, Schererville and Highland fire departments assisted the Griffith Fire Department with the brush fire.
