GRIFFITH | Representatives from AT&T joined Griffith town officials and community leaders on Monday to celebrate the addition of the first K-9 officer to the Griffith Police Department.

Gino was bought with donations raised from residents and local businesses, including a $13,000 contribution from local business owner Gus Parianos, and a $17,000 contribution from AT&T Pioneers, a volunteer organization within AT&T that participates in service projects in communities across Indiana.

“This is great news for the town of Griffith and our efforts to build a safer community,” said Jim Marker, chairman of the Griffith Safety Board, at an event at Jedi’s Garden Restaurant.

“By adding a K-9 officer to our department, we are sending a message to anyone who wants to transport or sell drugs here that we will not stand for that activity in our community.

"The community has really rallied to bring a K-9 unit here and that reflects the great citizens we have in our town.”

The K-9 officer was commissioned on May 9 and will be deployed June 1.
