GRIFFITH | Griffith High School/Middle School will celebrate Disability Awareness Month with its sixth annual Wheelchair Basketball Extravaganza at 1 p.m. March 22 at the school, 600 N. Wiggs St.
Griffith will be taking on the Hammond Rollin' Hoosiers with "extra gusto" as the school says "Goodby and Good Luck" to four graduating seniors, Jackie Morales, Jessica Hicks, Jodi Morales and Allison Nolan, all members of the Rollin' Hoosiers since middle school.
This year's special guests include Tom Lounges, of The Times Media Company and 89.1FM-The Lakeshore, who will be the color commentator; Tom Ghrist, of Horizon Bank, DJ extraordinaire; and "Rusty" the Gary SouthShore RailCats mascot.
"Each year, we have a couple of surprises," said Event Coordinator Thom Howell. "Last year, Miss Wheelchair Indiana and the Chicago Bulls Wheelchair Team joined us. This year, the Town of Griffith is officially proclaiming March as Disability Awareness Month in Griffith, and will be making this proclamation at the start of our game.
"Also, United Federal Credit Union will be presenting a $1,000 check to our four seniors to be donated in their names to a special organization of their choosing."
This year's theme is "Community Connections," "Appropriate," said Howell, "as we connect with our community of Griffith this year. Thank you Griffith for your generosity, time, and most important your support."
