GRIFFITH | The School Board on Thursday approved two new programs designed to help young children.
The Early Childhood Services program is geared for children up to 3 years old to help identify those who may have developmental problems, both learning and social.
"It's a really good thing for the parents and kids in the community," Superintendent Peter Morikis said.
This is a feeder program for the existing Head Start program at Franklin Community Center, he said.
The second new program is called Parents as Teachers, which guides parents as they nurture the development of their children up to kindergarten age.
"All parents need help in understanding the child development process," Morikis said.
This program usually takes place at home and sometimes at Beiriger Elementary School, he said.
Both are federal programs and will cost nothing to the school system, Morikis said.
The board also bid farewell to two board members who did not seek re-election: Margaret Garastik and Tim Owczarzak.
They will be replaced next month by Jennifer Dildine and Gerald Potacki.
As the meeting began, the board and audience observed a moment of silence for the 20 children and six adults who were killed in last week's shooting spree in a Connecticut elementary school.
