GRIFFITH | The school system has laid off one high school teacher but also is planning to hire five elementary school teachers.
The high school layoff was because of declining enrollment, School Superintendent Peter Morikis said.
The five additional elementary teacher openings are now open and posted, he added.
Morikis said the school system is striving for smaller class sizes in grades kindergarten through six.
"Our goal is an average of 20 kids per classroom with the additional staff," he noted. "We're proud of that."
Morikis stressed that there will always be some classes with fewer than 20 students and some with more.
In other business, Director of Technology Roberta Dragomer said the school system continues to keep pace with modern upgrades.
Traditional overhead projectors are a thing of the past as they are replaced by interactive projectors that work with white boards. All the schools will be equipped with them after installations are complete in Wadsworth and Ready elementary schools.
Dragomer added that ISTEP testing is now conducted online and recent tests revealed only minor problems.
"It was very smooth."
Dragomer also said the school system is implementing the Rosetta Stone program that will teach more than 20 foreign languages.
"Very, very cool," she said of the web-based program.
