GRIFFITH | With downtown Broad Street's renovation complete, Griffith is focusing on Main Street.
To that end, the Town Council hired Robinson Engineering of Merrillville to design construction engineering for the south side of Main.
The project will stretch from Broad Street east to Lafayette Street and west to the bike path.
"It's more of a beautification at this point," said Rick Ryfa, R-3rd, Town Council vice president. "Essentially, it will try to mirror what we've done" in the downtown area on Broad.
The design will include curb/gutter, sidewalks, brick pavers, planters or trees and decorative lighting.
The total cost of the design work will be $29,600.
Robinson said the actual construction and related costs will be about $331,000.
The council also gave permission to advertise for construction contractors after Robinson's design work is complete.
Ryfa said the south side work will be done this year. The north side, which is slated for 2014, is more complicated because there are many utility poles.
The town will meet with NIPSCO to work through some issues, Ryfa said.
"They (NIPSCO) have proven to be a good partner in the past and we expect the same in the future," he said.
