GRIFFITH | The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrilllville, and Lake County officials will hold a groundbreaking today to mark the start of construction for Griffith's sewer improvement project.
The ceremony is at 11 a.m. at the southwest corner of North Cline Avenue and West Elm Street.
The purpose of this project, at the southern part of Griffith along Elm Street and Cline Avenue, is to allow for the separation of sanitary and storm sewage systems and alleviate the occasional storm water backup and overflow problems that affect the wastewater treatment plant.
Work also includes roadway reconstruction and the addition of curbs and gutters through the sewer improvement project area.
The contract was awarded to Gough Inc. on June 29 for $842,338. The contractor plans to start work on the main roads this winter.
Construction duration is projected at 130 days. The project is expected to be completed by spring.
