Maria Miluesnic, who owns John’s Pizzeria, with her husband Nik, says she loves her Griffith location.

“My heat is in Griffith because that is where we started,” Miluesnic said. “It’s a phenomenal town to have a business in. They are so supportive. They are so easy to work with. Anything you need they are there.”

Miluesnic said the town’s charm is that “it is very old school, old world and just a tight-knit community.”

Twenty years ago the couple purchased John’s Pizzeria and its traditional

Calumet Region-famous recipe from the original owners.

“I was in college and my husband and I both worked there,” Miluesnic said. “When he was selling, we thought ‘let’s do it.’ The opportunity kind of presented itself like it was meant to be.”

John’s Pizzeria, with 25 employees, has two locations: 132 S. Broad St. in Griffith and 1209 Sheffield Ave. in Dyer. Both open at 3 p.m., closing at 10 p.m. during the week and at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Both offer delivery, carryout and catering on a small scale. Dyer has a dining room and lounge with seven plasma televisions and a full-service bar.

Miluesnic is proud of their cooking process and finished product. Everything is made fresh from scratch with quality ingredients, she said.

“Our sauces and our crust are all homemade,” Miluesnic said. “The ingredients are all fresh. Nothing is frozen. Nothing comes in a can. We have done things the same way that it has been done for over 70 years that the business has been around. We still continue that same traditional way of cooking.”

Along with their famous pizza recipe, John’s Pizzeria carries an assortment of appetizers, homemade breads, salads, pasta, seafood, veal, chicken, sandwiches and desserts.

“The food is fantastic.” Miluesnic said. “There’s something for everyone.”

Daily specials include: Mondays and Tuesdays pizza, pasta and a pitcher of soda for $14.95 for two or $19.95 for four or more; Wednesdays, senior’s 55 years and older receive a 20 percent discount; Thursdays all-you-can-eat pizza with side salad; Fridays a free appetizer with pizza order; Saturday two pasta dinners for $19.95; and Sundays order any sandwich and get the second half off.

There is much satisfaction in the business because of her customers and staff, she said.

“I love the people who come in,” Miluesnic said. “I love the kids that work for us.”

Giving back to the community is a priority.

“We are involved in anything that has to do with the kids, anything that has to do with the schools, anything with someone who is sick and has something going on,” Miluesnic said. “We will do anything for the town.”

Miluesnic said her business philosophy is simple.

“It is what it is,” she said. “That is so true. Just deal with it every day. Take it as it is.”
