GRIFFITH | The Lake County Public Library system broke ground Thursday for a new facility at the southwest corner of 45th and Colfax avenues.
The new 15,000-square-foot Griffith library will replace the old 8,811-square-foot facility on Broad Street.
A grand opening is expected to take place in November, Lake County Public Library system Director Ana Grandfield told the Town Council at a recent meeting.
The council is considering a request from Grandfield to grant a development fee waiver that would save the library system about $15,000.
Plans for the new building include a limestone exterior and landscaping that will conform with the town's standards, Grandfield said.
"It'll be a nice setting," she said.
Since the new building will be almost twice as large as the existing one, separate rooms will be available for community meetings and children's programs, Grandfield said.
There also will be a larger selection of books and various recorded media.
The library plans to vacate the old facility on Broad Street, which was built in 1967, Grandfield said.
The Town Council has expressed interest in acquiring the building.
