There are many good reasons why for the past five years Times readers have chosen Meyer’s Heating & Cooling of Griffith as among their top picks for “Best in the Region” in the heating and air conditioning, electrician and plumbing categories.

Founded in 1951, the company, which is owned by Joe Yothment and Paul Starcevich, is located at 100 N. Griffith Blvd.

“Our service - that is what we are all about,” Yothment said. “We are really just a one call does it all contractor. You can call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Meyer’s service technicians are professionally trained in heating, cooling plumbing and electric.

“So whatever your problem is, that is what we are about,” Yothment said. “You call. We are there; that is our trademark. We have really worked so hard at keeping our reputation and keeping our integrity of being able to serve homeowners and businesses.”

Meyer’s services include installation of new HVAC equipment from the design phase through completion, ensuring every system is sized to address the exact load requirements of the occupied area. System performance evaluation is a thorough assessment of the home heating and AC system which can locate specific deficiencies that degrade performance and lower efficiency. Meyer’s technicians evaluate the equipment, air distribution system and the building perimeter to identify potential upgrade opportunities. Repair services include diagnosing and repairing virtually every type of HVAC product, including heat pumps, air conditioners, furnaces and package units. Meyer’s honors valid warranties from every recognized American manufacturer and provides same day service for emergency situations.

Yothment advises that consumers make sure they hire contractors who are licensed in their own towns.

“That means that they have fulfilled the license requirements,” Yothment said. “They have the insurance so if they are in your house and they get hurt they have workmen’s comp and that they are a legitimate company. Of course, the next thing is who are you letting in your house?”

Yothment is so proud of his service techs that Meyer’s newspaper ads feature their photos and years of service.

“We want you to know who represents our company when that person comes into your house, especially with the fear of the elderly and women alone at home,” Yothment said. “You want to make sure that you have people who have had background checks and random drug tests – people who are going to come in and do the job which they have been told to do and leave. That is the peace of mind.”

Meyer’s has 48 employees.

“We like to brag about how good our employees are and how conscientious they are,” Yothment said. “We have many employees who have been with us many years. It is not like we are constantly turning over people. We are proud of our employees and our work speaks for itself and our reputation speaks for itself.”

Yothment said Meyer’s is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and a preferred Angie’s List contractor.

“You have to do a good job to get those types of accolades,” he said.

Meyer’s also maintenance agreements for residential and commercial customers designed to keep HVAC systems operating reliably and economically over the lifetime of the equipment. Service agreements are tailored to the needs of the customer and usually include seasonal visits. Meyer’s technicians inspect critical system components, check refrigerant levels, clean coils and perform a number of other important services.

“It is so important that you are on a schedule so that you are not worried about it,” Yothment said. “We are the ones that are calling you setting up a time to look at your furnace before the cold weather hits and look at your air conditioner before the first heat wave snaps. We are taking care of your equipment. It is not a worry that you have but our responsibility as a contractor.”

In addition to Griffith, Meyer’s services Highland, Munster, Schererville, Dyer, St John, Merrillville and Gary. Yothment said Griffith is a great central location for serving those customers.

Meyer’s believes in giving back to the community, Yothment said.

A member of seven chambers of commerce including Griffith, Meyer’s works closely with the town of Griffith and contributes to many civic, church and other fundraising events.

“We are a big part of the community and involved with many local organizations throughout the area,” Yothment said.

The most satisfying aspects of the business, Yothment said, are working with the customers and that so many families are fed through working at Meyer’s.

“There is satisfaction in knowing that we are a valued part of the economy in the area, working and helping our customers with their needs,” Yothment said.

The company motto is “Fast, Efficient Repairs and Installations.”

“When the homeowner or business calls, it is imperative that we get out there and we get things fixed. We get them repaired and we get them back to a normal state.”
