Power had been restored by 8 a.m. today to 89 percent of the 28,000 customers affected by outages from a Thursday night storm, according to information on the NIPSCO website.
Additional crews and support have been added to enhance restoration effort, NIPSCO said.
Power is expected to be restored to nearly all affected customers in Griffith, Hammond, Highland and Munster by late Saturday, NIPSCO said. Crews will continue to work around the clock until all customers have been restored.
In some isolated cases where single homes are affected by weatherhead damage — damage to their electric meter — or other severe damage, restoration times may extend into Sunday.
The storm late Thursday brought lightning, hail and winds of more than 70 mph and hit the region while NIPSCO crews were wrapping up work to restore power to a total 105,000 customers impacted by a previous storm on Monday.
Outages can be reported from a smart phone or other mobile device or by computer at www.NIPSCO.com/Outage Center, or by calling 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726).
