GRIFFITH | Griffith Fire Department will host its annual open house from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Station 3, Ridge Road and Indiana Street.

Fire personnel will conduct home fire safety displays and firefighter skill demonstrations. Children can participate in the Junior Firefighter’s Challenge obstacle course, enter a coloring contest and enjoy a hot dog.

An estimated 165,400 cooking fires occur in the U.S. annually, so live fire demonstrations will illustrate the damage a small kitchen fire can cause. Residents will also learn how to extinguish a small cooking fire.

New this year, Griffith police and fire departments have joined forces to instruct parents on proper child safety seat installations. Learning how to properly install the safety seat and setting an appointment for inspection may save a child’s life. Three state-certified technicians staff the two departments.

The Griffith Fire Department Auxiliary will collect gently used books for local senior services.
