GRIFFITH | A 15-year-old girl told police she broke free from a man who grabbed her and tried to pull her into his vehicle Friday night.
The incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of East Glen Park Avenue, police said. The girl told police she was approached by a man in a white SUV with Illinois license plates who asked if she knew someone named Becky. The girl told police the man asked if she would get into his vehicle and help him find Becky.
After the girl told him no, the man asked her a series of personal questions she refused to answer. When the girl continued to ignore him, police said the man got out of his vehicle, grabbed the girl and tried to pull her toward the vehicle.
The girl told police she broke away and ran to her home a few blocks away. The man got into his vehicle and drove east on Glen Park Avenue, the girl told police.
The suspect was described as African-American with a light complexion and about 20 years old with a medium build. He had a beard without a mustache and was wearing a white shirt.
"Despite the time of day, frequently traveled roadway and the populated area, no witnesses to this event have been located," according to a statement issued Saturday afternoon by Griffith police.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the Griffith Police Department's nonemergency line at (219) 924-3141 or the department's tip line at (219) 922-3085.
