GRIFFITH | Republicans unanimously elected Larry Ballah on Monday to serve on the Town Council.
Ballah was chosen during a caucus to replace George Jerome, who recently became Griffith's clerk-treasurer.
Ballah was the only person to apply for the 2nd Ward seat, said Kim Krull, chairwoman of the Lake County Republican Central Committee.
Ballah will begin his new role Tuesday, when the council is scheduled to have a study session.
"I'm excited about it," Ballah said. "I'm looking for the opportunity to be more involved with the town."
Ballah is also a member of the Griffith Board of Zoning Appeals and is the current chairman of the Griffith Plan Commission.
He will retain his seats on these two boards, said Griffith Town Council Vice President Rick Ryfa, R-3rd.
Ballah, 57, said he is a lifelong Griffith resident and a 1973 graduate of Griffith High School.
He is vice president of design services for Tonn and Blank Construction of Michigan City.
Ballah and his wife, Debbie, have eight children.
