GRIFFITH | St. Nicholas (aka Rev. Theodore J. Mens, Pastor of St. Mary Church, Griffith) on his long journey from the Netherlands stopped by early on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 to visit the students in the Religious Education Program at St. Mary Church in Griffith. The Feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated on December 6th, but the students celebrated early during their classes on Monday afternoon and evening.
St. Nick was greeted by "reindeer" (students) who led him into St. Mary -Hildebrandt Hall. Sitting down by the fireplace and near the Christmas tree, Saint Nicholas read the children the story of his life, doing good by helping those in need, and spreading faith and love to all he encountered. After the story, St. Nick was surprised by the children as they sang "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas" and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" to him as he passed out candy canes to all good boys and girls. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed milk and cookies and the spirit of St. Nicholas.
Father Mens was born in Holland, in the Netherlands and re-creates the role of St. Nicholas every year for all the children to enjoy in St. Mary School and the Religious Education Program.
