Truck driver Rich Powell has logged four million miles without an accident over his 40-year career – enough miles to circle the globe 160 times.
The Griffith resident was recognized recently with a luncheon and presentation of the 4 Million Mile Award, by Ruan Transport in East Chicago, the company he has driven for during the past nine years.
“It was a real surprise,” Powell said of the recognition. “I was only doing what I’m supposed to do.”
Powell has driven one million miles for Ruan Transport, and is currently responsible for making regional deliveries of cryogenic liquids. He travels between 50 and 400 miles each trip and credits his safe driving record to being aware of changing road, weather and traffic conditions.
“My route varies daily. The long hours are a drawback, but I like that the job varies, and that I get to be alone,” he said.
Powell has also driven for McKeown Transportation, The Linde Group, and Praxair Inc., and has traveled across 48 states and throughout Canada. He plans to continue on the road.
“I’m probably not going to retire in the near future,” he said.
Powell is a member of the Builders for Christ group, working as a supervisor with volunteers from around the country to build churches.
“I’ve been involved for 13 years. We have built churches nationally, and repaired roofs and built wheelchair ramps locally,” he said.
“I enjoy helping to build God’s kingdom and helping those in need.”
Powell is a member of the Glen Park Masonic Lodge 732 and the Orak Shrine, and enjoys riding motorcycles. He lives in Griffith with wife, Claudia, and is the grandfather of two.
