GRIFFITH | A 74-year-old Griffith man died Thursday morning in a fire at his home, officials said.
Maurice Campbell, of 423 N. Arbogast St., was pronounced dead at 5:10 a.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office.
A determination of the cause and manner of his death are pending, a coroner's report said.
Griffith Fire Chief Roy Schoon said firefighters were called to the single-family home at 2:40 a.m. by Campbell's wife. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy flames on the side of the house in a living room area.
Campbell was dead when firefighters arrived, Schoon said.
Campbell's wife suffered smoke inhalation and his daughter had minor burns to her hands. Both were treated at the scene, Schoon said.
Schoon estimates about $60,000 in damage to the home as a result of the fire. The cause remains under investigation, he said.
Lt. Matthew Argadine, of the Griffith Police Department, said detectives are always involved in any death investigation in town. There is no indication of any foul play in Campbell's death, he said.
Schoon said the cause of the blaze appears to be accidental.
