HAMMOND | A three-party agreement has been finalized for constructing a new biking and pedestrian bridge across the Little Calumet River.
Hammond and Munster will share the cost of the bridge on property owned by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, according to the memorandum of understanding approved by the Hammond Board of Public Works and Safety.
The new bridge, to be installed next year, will link the two communities through the Monon Bike Trail, which follows the old railroad route.
City Engineer Stan Dostatni said the old Monon rail trestle won't be used for the new path, which instead will be built by placing a prefabricated structure across a more narrow section of the river just east of the old bridge.
The crossing will be made between Harrison Avenue and Lyman Avenue on the north, and Manor Avenue on the south.
Part of the planned Marquette Greenway Trail, the path is expected to eventually link Millennium Park in Chicago with Crown Point and New Buffalo, Mich.
The new bridge agreement was approved by the NICTD board, the Hammond City Council and the Munster Town Council last summer.
