HAMMOND | Three people were airlifted following a house fire Saturday in the 4300 block of Torrence Avenue.
Firefighters rescued an 85-year-old man, 55-year-old woman and 11-year-old boy from the house after being called to the scene at 3:58 p.m., Hammond Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Margraf said.
Margraf said radio traffic from the fire indicated people were trapped inside the home. Margraf said CPR was performed on the 85-year-old man before he was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond. The man then was airlifted to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
The woman and boy were airlifted directly to the University of Chicago Medical Center because both were suffering from smoke inhalation, Margraf said.
Margraf said firefighters secured the property and will call in the state fire marshal's office to assist in investigating the cause of the fire.
