Dr. Greta Pope will provide a 40-minute presentation and concert entitled Paris Noir. . . American Jazz in Paris.
The concert chronicles the history of African-American jazz artists as they took their music and culture to Paris during the early–to mid-20th century. The presentation not only looks at the music of the era, but celebrates the accomplishments of African-Americans in science, medicine and literature.
Pope is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed entertainer who performs styles from jazz to opera and from rhythm and blues to Broadway.
Several community members and leaders will be recognized, including Indiana State Senator Lonnie Randolph, D-East Chicago; attorney Barbara Bolling, of Gary, a member of the NAACP National Board of Directors; Third District Hammond City Councilman Anthony W. Higgs; the Rev. Herman A. Polk Sr. of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Hammond; and Hammond Community Development Director Owana Miller.
Scholarships will be awarded to local residents.
Jazz music will be performed by vocalist Rhoelle Blackmon and pianist Marvin Weatherspoon.
