HAMMOND | The Area Career Center students will have the chance to challenge their program and practical knowledge and abilities at State SkillsUSA, a Career & Technical Education competition in Indianapolis on April 19 & 20th. Students represent 11 local high schools, (Calumet, Clark, Edison Lake Station, Gavit, Griffith, Hammond, Highland, Lake Central, Morton, Munster, and Whiting).

In February, the Area Career Center hosted the regional competition against students from Elkhart Area Career Center, A.K. Smith Career Center in Michigan City, and South Bend Riley High School, and Crown Point High School. Students competed in written and practical exams in their program of study and had to place in the top five positions in order to qualify to compete at the state level.

The following are the areas of competition and students who will compete at the State level:

Audio/Radio Production: Angel Jimenez, Munster High School, Zachary Brown, Morton High School, Kaleb Pointer, Lake Central High School.

Automotive Refinishing Technology: Jalaal Abdur , Hammond High School, Cristian Favela, Gavit High School, Joshua Hughes, Hammond High School, Isaiah Jiminez, Griffith High School, Anthony Steele, Morton High School.

Automotive Services Technology: Francisco Bahena, Hammond High School.

Broadcast News Production: Jordan Martin, Lake Central High School, Bianca Martinez, Lake Central High School, Benjamin Tomera, Highland High School.

Computer Maintenance Technology: Logan Bainer, Lake Central High School, Alex Brown, Lake Central High School, Cameron Chorba, Whiting High School, Zach Lesniewski, Lake Central High School

Cabinetmaking: Kyle Gordon, Griffith High School, Doug Latham, Gavit High School, Joseph Sullivan, Highland High School.

Carpentry: Nathan Bubash, Munster High School.

Cosmetology: Jacklyn Fleming, Calumet High School, Gabrielle Rodriguez, Gavit High School.
