HAMMOND | Hammond Reads, Inc., is celebrating its 10th Anniversary from 1-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, with a free Ice Cream Social at Franciscan St. Margaret Health - Hammond Campus 8th floor conference center.

The Ice Cream Social will feature ice cream with toppings, free books for children and adults, information on literacy and an opportunity to learn more about literacy.

Founded in 2001, Hammond Reads is dedicated to its mission: Building a city of readers.The organization's vision is for all citizens of Hammond to celebrate reading as a fundamental part of life.

Supported by a volunteer board of directors, Hammond Reads' efforts to promote literacy include:

The ABC Project: free books for every newborn baby at Franciscan St. Margaret Health

The Dictionary Project: free dictionaries for every third grade student in the city of Hammond (partnership with Hammond Rotary and Telecom Pioneers)

Annual Essay Contest: For school-age children through senior adults (awards in several categories); literacy/reading topics

Book Giveaways: free book distributions for adults and children at community and special events
