HAMMOND | A 23-year-old Beecher man was arrested and charged with failure to obey a traffic control device in a work zone and operating while intoxicated refusal nearly Thursday after a police stop in a work zone.

According to Indiana State Police, Kyle C. Ohlendorf was stopped at 3:24 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80/94 east of Calumet Avenue after allegedly ignoring construction barrels, driving into a work zone and stopping to talk to a construction worker.

Police said Ohlendorf passed a state police sergeant stationed in her vehicle in the work zone and was headed toward a semi tanker loaded with water. The semi driver maneuvered to block Ohlendorf's vehicle so the sergeant could stop him.

Police said construction workers were in the road in front of the semi at the time of the incident.

Ohlendorf allegedly told police he had been out celebrating the night before and was "lost and confused" when he allegedly drove around the construction barrels to talk to one of the workers.
