HAMMOND | A death investigation is under way after a body of an unidentified woman was found behind a Hammond apartment building Thursday morning.
The remains of the woman, estimated to be in her late teens to early 20s, was discovered in the alley of 5945 Hyslop Place in the Harrison Park area, police said.
A person who frequents the area found the woman and called police, Hammond Police Lt. Richard Hoyda said.
The Lake County coroner's office responded to the scene and removed the woman from a large trash container, according to a news release.
Investigators believe she is biracial and suffered trauma to her head and body, the release states.
She was found wearing gray Under Armour shorts, a green and white tank top and white Nike shoes.
The tank top is a size medium and her shoes are a size seven. She was also wearing two yellow rubber bracelets and a pink rubber bracelet with the word "Libra" written on it, the news release states.
Investigators issued an alert to all local law enforcement officials in case any police recognize the woman, Hoyda said.
They also ran her fingerprints through the Indiana system without any successful results, he said.
Investigators are scouring reports from the local area to see if she may have been reported as a missing person.
